The national cricket team of England Joe Root openly rejected the role of captain of the ODI. He said he had had his skipper time, and whoever got the role will do a brilliant job for the team in the format.
The National Cricket Team of England is looking for a new skipper in ODI format. Indeed, Jos Buttler left the role after the team had a horrible campaign in the ICC 2025 champions trophy. The three Lions were faced with a group trip because they did not win a single match in the tournament.
Jos Buttler fought as captain in white ball format
Jos Buttler, as a skipper, was already in a lot of scanning because England under him had a difficult period after winning the ICC T20 World 2022. After that, they had a hard time in white ball format, not having won bilateral series as well as large tournaments.
Jos Buttler failed as a captain as well as the leader of the ICC 2023 World Cup. They also played a bad cricket brand in the tournament because they failed to qualify for the semi-final. We expected that they offer a brilliant performance in the ICC Champions 2025 trophy, but this was not the case either.
I think I had my time as a captain in an English ship – Joe Root
England needs a skipper, Joe Root has excluded himself, expressing his confidence in the player who will be appointed captain. He admitted that they were far from the best of the ICC 2025 champions trophy, but added that there was a lot of talent in the group. Addressing Sky Sports, he said:
“I do not think. I think this ship has sailed. I think I had my time as a captain in an English ship. But I am sure that anyone gets the opportunity to do it will be extremely proud and will do a brilliant job. It is disappointing. We have certainly not played near what we are capable of.
“Talent and capacity within this group in terms of results were lower than a game. But as I said, there is so much talent and there are so many things to come from this team. You know, you look at Brendon to come, he had two months before the tournament to try and get his ideas, his opinions,” said Joe Root.
It is a very good opportunity to reset and move forward – Joe Root
Joe Root added that with a new captain arriving, it will be an excellent opportunity for the team to reset and move forward. He said they wanted to return to the period between 2015 and 2019. He explained:
“And there is going to be a new captain who will arrive. So, it is sort of a new combination. I think it is a very good opportunity to reset and move forward as a group and return to the summits which we know we are capable of and where we were in and around this phase of 15 to 2019.”
Harry Brook, who is vice-captain from England to White-Ball, is the favorite to lead the team. In addition, the name Ben Stokes floats for the same.
