This message contains spoilers For “The White Lotus”.
We have exceeded the median point of the last season of “The White Lotus”, and things are more chaotic than what we could expect. Episode 5, “Full-Moon Party”, is the summit of anxious anticipation, because it carries the disturbing omen of a disaster that awaits to occur, thanks to the doubtful choices that everyone makes. The previous episode has seen a panicked gaitok (Thapthimthong’s Thapthimthong) will realize that his security pistol is missing, and here, he is struggling with the deadly consequences of his professional surveillance. Meanwhile, Ratliff Brothers Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola) party with Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) and Chloé (Charlotte Le Bon), but the night ends with things that really become, Really uncontrollable. We also see Timothy (Jason Isaacs) being constantly on Edge ™, realizing that he must face all the consequences to be part of a Wall Street money laundering program.
While these rather serious events take place, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) is in serious danger while Greg / Gary (Jon Gries) is determined to silence her before speaking. Greg, however, is not the only one to have a murder in his mind, because Rick (Walton Goggins) has experienced revenge (Walton Goggins) is currently in Bangkok with a half -cooked plan to face the alleged murderer of his father. In previous episodes, Rick has verbalized how much he is broken as a person and how his visit to Thailand is linked to his quest for emotional closure. Once in Bangkok, Rick meets an old friend (who remains unnamed from now on), played by none other than the actor Oscarized and nominated for Emmys Sam Rockwell (!), Who has just penetrated with casualness into the episode.
Let us dive into the motivations of this surprise character and the role he could end up playing in the later episodes of the series.
The character of Sam Rockwell could be the key to Rick’s revenge arc in the white lotus
The incredible versatility of Rockwell as an actor is fully exposed in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (for which he won an Oscar for the best support actor), and “Moon” from 2009, where he plays an employee of the Lunar Solitaire station that stumbles on a horrible existential secret. His vast filmography also includes “The Green Mile”, “Matchstick Men” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, among others. In addition, a fun fact: Rockwell is married to Leslie Bibb, who plays Kate in this season of “The White Lotus”.
After Rick urges the character of Rockwell to have a drink at the bar with him, he refuses, saying that he has been sober for a few months. This conversation takes an unexpected turn when Rick’s friend embarks on a monologue on his sexual identity and his evolving desires and how – in his opinion – he goes (inevitably) to self -activation and the concept of salvation. The irony of this monologue is not lost, because “the White Lotus” mainly concerned western Western tourists and with white predominance considering marginalized communities (which often include people of color) as bridges towards a sort of spiritual ascent, religion / eastern spirituality being appropriate in a hurry to reach this end. Season 3 appears on this aspect, examining both sincere and hollow attempts at the rich / privileged to use Buddhism as a means of repairing the cracks of their existence.
In the case of the character of Rockwell, this perceived spiritual osmosis is accompanied by its mention of the workers of the trans sex, which he attributes to his journey towards the magic illumination, but we are (unfortunately) aware of the perspectives of the people he mentions. For a character who is simply supposed to help Rick in Bangkok and pretend to be someone to make sure that everything goes as planned, the friend reveals much more than expected, representing a well -intentioned box that the show has repeatedly dissected. Even his attempts as sober and control of his life are tinged with hunger to absorb and consume The oriental principles of spirituality, which feel rather empty in more in -depth inspection.
At the end of this revealing conversation, the character of Rockwell puts Rick a weapon Rick, and they agree to meet at the Manor of Jim Hollinger for the Destiny Meeting. Depending on the way things take place, Rick’s friend could prove to be instrumental in the upcoming disorderly confrontation, which will change the fate of all those involved.
The episodes of season 3 of “The White Lotus” fall every Sunday on HBO.
