Virgil Van Dijk insisted that anyone claiming to know how discussions on their future of Liverpool will end “who lie” because he did not know if he will stay in Anfield beyond this summer.
The Dutch captain is in the last months of his contract and there have been important speculations according to which, despite the interest of a certain number of major European parties, he will finally put the pen on paper on a contract extension.
However, this whisper of optimism for Liverpool fans was suffocated after the elimination of the Tuesday Champions League when Van Dijk argued that he was always ignorant of the place where he will play his football next season.
“I have no idea,” he said. “I still have no idea at the moment. Really. I have no idea at the moment.
“It’s not in suspense. Nothing waiting. There is just … I continue to say the same thing. Listen, there are ten games to do, and it’s my full goal. If there are news, you will know it. I don’t even know. Everyone knows there are conversations behind the scenes, but that’s it.
“For the moment, I don’t even know what’s going on next year. If someone says he knows, he lies in your face.”
People like Real Madrid, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain were all linked to movements for Van Dijk, and speculation on a possible free transfer to the latter were triggered when the defender was spotted in talks with the owner of PSG Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sports director Luis Campos after Tuesday’s defeat.
Liverpool has a lot of contractual headache to manage this summer. Alongside Van Dijk, Star Mohamed Salah attacker approaches the end of his own agreement and reports suggest that he was offered to Barcelona while he is looking for a resolution on his future.
Meanwhile, the rear right Trent Alexander-Arnold is also on an expired contract, long-term admirers, Real Madrid pushing to finalize an agreement for the international in England.
