You have to joke. Canelo Alvarez against William Scull was not only dull – it was a television nap, a 12 -round sleeping pill that left the fans to watch their screens wondering if someone forgot to tell the fighters that they were in a fight. He does not just under the management-he insulted all those who have standing, paid or wasted an evening on weekends hoping for the action. And yet we are there, with Scull who made him sink his mouth, saying that he should have won. Amazing.
Scull’s reasoning? “If he doesn’t hit myself, why should I risk it?” Oh please. It is not a tactical genius – hiding. This hopes to skate by doing less than the other guy. Of course, the Cuban style values the defense, but it is not an excuse to launch a handful of punches on 36 minutes and pretend to master “sweet science”. This is called boxing, not “to exist quietly in the ring”.
And now, like Salt in an open injury, Amir Khan jumps. Khan – The same guy who took off by Canelo years ago – now says that Scull won.
Did you watch this Canelo disaster against Scull and that you left, thinking that Scull won by two laps? You fell asleep halfway and do you dream of a different fight? Because the rest of us was well awake – painfully – watching one of the 12 slowest and most lifeless rounds of recent memory.
“It was the prettiest and it could have gone in both directions.” Pretty? Pretty what, Amir – quite terrible? Quite embarrassing? Quite close to a farce worthy of reimbursement? Come on, guy. You have been in big fights. You know what a performance looks like, and that’s not all. Scull landed almost nothing. Canelo barely was able to sweat. The only thing that should have “went in both directions” was the remote control – off.
“I probably won Scull by two laps.” Based on what, exactly? Walking back convincingly? Smiling in Canelo between the towers? Throw the occasional jab in the air? It’s a thing to be generous. It is another to be completely detached from reality.
“I like Canelo, I think he is a big fighter, and I think he is baking the shots better and landed the cleaner blows.” Okay – So you admit that Canelo landed better and cleaner, but do you give it to Scull? It is not an analysis, it is a sketch of comedy.
“Whatever the fight took place, it was a great performance of the two fighters.” No, Amir. No, this was not the case. It was a slow, dragging and clumsy non-event that let the fans mumble “Never Again” even before the final bell is probe. Calling this “big” spits in front of each fan who sat down hoping that something, anything, happens.
Let’s be clear: rent Scull’s “performance” encourages these garbage. He tells the fighters that they can shake, hug, dance around and always get a tape in the back thereafter. And a former champion, no less – it’s embarrassing.
So here is a suggestion, Amir: next time, just say that it was a failure. Say that Scull has survived, perhaps doing it near the eyes, but do not insult boxing by dressing as “brilliant”. Fans deserve honesty, not illusion.
