The IRS has 12 different APIs which are fragmented and make it difficult for engineers to upgrade computer systems.

The creation of the unified API layer will simplify communication between different applications and data sets, which, according to IRS, will result in a more transparent interface for taxpayers and internal teams while making the development process for future products and services more effective.
