Kenya has the reputation of a relatively stable nation in a volatile region. The frustration towards the government reached a new summit last year during deadly demonstrations against an increase in tax. Dozens of people have been abducted or arbitrarily detained by the security forces, according to activists and human rights groups.
Mr. Ruto has promoted the increase in tax as a necessary measure to limit the amazing debt of the country.
A rich businessman who grew up poor, Mr. Ruto campaigned on an economy improvement platform for Kenyans. His criticisms say that this had not happened.
