Benfica retained a torrent of pressure in the second half of Bayern Munich to beat the defending German champions at first place in group C during the club World Cup thanks to the first strike from Andreas Schjelderup in Charlotte.
The left bird Schjelderup, 21, produced a cool finish for the winner in the 13th minute at the Bank of America Stadium, where the Portuguese team looked comfortable before Bayern made him bring him Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich at halftime.
Midfielder Kimmich was denied a long-term equalizer because Kane was offside, and Konrad Laimer hit the distant post after collecting Thomas Muller’s pass inside the box on the right.
The Eagles goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, was in an inspired form, including a safeguard at close range of Aleksandar Pavlovic and a late stop to thwart Leroy Sane in one after Kane played a pass in the defense.
Benfica has finished a point above Bayern and will face the finalists of group D – containing Chelsea, Esperance or Lafc – in the last 16, with Die Roten of the Brazilian leaders Flamengo, who won the section.
