The director of “The Brutalist” becomes real on the realities of making a film nominated at Oscars.

He continued by explaining that filmmakers are “not paid to promote a film”, and often the promotion calendar can hinder other opportunities to earn money with their work.
“If you watch some films that were created in Cannes, it was almost a year ago … I mean, our film was created in September. So I have been doing this for six months. And I did not had no income because I don’t have one it’s time to go to work.
Nominated for 10 Oscars at the 2025 Academy Awards, “The Brutalist” follows the Jewish architect, László Tóth, played by Adrien Brody, while he moved to America after surviving the Holocaust. The film sees him trying to earn enough money to bring his wife and niece to join him in America, when he connects with a rich man who hires him to build a community center.
“I have spoken to many filmmakers who have the films that are nominated this year who cannot pay their rent. I mean, it’s a real thing.”

Brody has already won the Golden Globe, the Critics’ Choice Award and the BAFTA for its representation of László, and is a favorite in the race for best leading actor at the Academy Awards.
In addition to the nominations for Corbet and Brody, the film is also nominated for the best film, the best support actress, the best support actor, the best original script and many others.
“I am grateful to have made a film that talks about the immense tragedy of a period in history,” said Brody in Variety in February. “And so that it is told with very little sentimentality, as a visual reference of a time which cannot be forgotten and an omnipresent undercover which cannot be ignored.”
