Twenty-seven “underperforming” Kohl’s stores are expected to close this spring.
The locations, named last week by Kohl’s, will close their doors permanently by April, according to the Wisconsin-based retailer.
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” Kohl’s said.

The stores Kohl’s chose to close are located in 15 states. In total, the retailer currently operates more than 1,150 locations across the United States.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury said of planned store and distribution center closures. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary steps to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Kohl’s said it has offered affected individuals who work at the soon-to-be-closed locations “competitive” severance packages or the opportunity to apply for other Kohl’s positions.

San Bernardino distribution center will also close
The retailer’s planned “real estate changes” for 2025 also involve closing its San Bernardino, Calif., e-commerce distribution center in May, the retailer said.
The company has “increased efficiency through new technology capabilities in the newest EFC facilities and expanded the company’s ability to fulfill customer orders from stores, allowing the company to maintain its ability to fulfill orders without the San Bernardino facilities,” he explained.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the retailer said it would collect between $60 million and $80 million in pre-tax charges related to the announced “real estate and workforce rationalization.” .

These costs will largely occur during the last quarter of 2024, according to Kohl’s.

In late November, the retailer reported generating $10.21 billion in net sales during the first three quarters of 2024. That’s down more than 6% from the same nine months a year ago.
Its net profit for the first three quarters of 2024 was $61 million.
