The pro-Russian presidential candidate in Romania, Călin Georgescu, who won the first round of a vote canceled later last year, was recruited for interrogation by the police.
The official Facebook page of Georgescu said that the far -right politician, who intended to appear again in a replay in May of the elections, had been recovered because he was about to file papers for the competition .
The Romanian media reported that he had been brought to question as a suspect of having violated anti-extermist legislation. A Georgescu lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
“They seek to invent evidence to justify the theft of elections and do anything to block my new candidacy for the presidency,” said an article on the politician’s Facebook page. “Where’s democracy?”
Last year, the elections were abandoned after the authorities of Romania allegedly alleged the Russian interference in favor of Georgescu, whose surprise victory in the first round was amazed at the country’s political establishment.
But they have not yet provided final evidence and this month, the American vice-president, JD Vance, denounced the decision as an indication of European decline on democracy.
