Liverpool’s quest to replace Virgil van Dijk with Borussia Dortmund Nico Schlotterbeck was complicated by his rival interest D’Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona, a report affirms.
Van Dijk publicly admitted that he did not know what his future has in store for the last months of his Liverpool contract, and the Dutchman would consider a gigantic contract offer on the side of the Saudi Pro League Al Hilal.
While Liverpool wants to keep Van Dijk, they started to prepare for a future without their starry defender and Schlotterbeck was recently appointed as a potential target for the Reds.
Liverpool hopes that the domestic difficulties of Dortmund – they are seated 11th in the Bundesliga and are very unlikely to qualify for the Champions League – could force them to entertain the offers of Schlotterbeck but, according to BallThey are not the only side to have developed this plan.
There is an increasing interest in Schlotterbeck of the Premier League, where Arsenal and Newcastle United are presented as suitors, while the Giants of La Liga, Real Madrid and Barcelona, would both monitor his situation.
Dortmund, for their part, hope to link the 25 -year -old to a new contract and wish to prove their commitment to Schlotterbeck by making him the next team captain, but there is an acceptance that their probable failure to qualify for the Champions League could encourage players to seek an outing, while some will have to be severely sold to lift the lost funds without European football.
As the last two years of his contract approaches, the final decision rests with Schlotterbeck. A new contract will be offered if he indicates a desire to sign, but clubs from all over Europe are starting to turn in case he chooses to take his talents elsewhere.
