The writing is on the wall – and has been for some time now.
A 17 -point difference in security means, within a miracle, the return of Southampton in the Premier League will be short.
Until now, their counting of nine points is the lowest after 29 games recorded. Even the boss of the saints, Ivan Juric, admitted that he knew what is happening.
“We are going to go down, but [we want to go down] With more fighting, more dignity and more of everything, “he said after the 2-1 defeat against the Wolves before the international break in March.
“Today was another game [that suggests] We are not ready to take points. Something is still missing.
“The desire to play well and attack is there. The guys want to win and do their best. There are times when we are not good enough, and that’s it.”
Despite the misery of this season, fans of saints have admirably packed St Mary’s every two weeks. Hope is still coming back, but the atmosphere is almost always considerably lower when it is time to leave.
This was completely contrasted with last season, when an undefeated race of 22 games in the championship helped its success to promote the Premier League via a final victory in the dam against Leeds at Wembley. And the harsh reality is that many are now talking about Southampton as one of the worst teams in the history of the Premier League.
In that spirit, we take a look at the unwanted records that they could beat from here and the end of the season on May 25 …
Lowest cumulative points
What is the current record? Derby set the record for total the lowest cumulative points in the history of the Premier League during the 2007/08 season, when they only collected 11 points.
Could Southampton break it? Yes. The saints have only collected nine points so far. They only need three additional points of their last nine games and, depending on their point rate per match of 0.31, they are on the right track to finish 14 points. However, it would always be the second lowest return ever recorded.
Fewer points won at home
What is the current record? Sunderland only collected seven points on 19 games during the 2005/06 season, including a victory, four draws and 14 defeats.
Could Southampton break it? Yes. The saints only have four points of their 14 games in St Mary’s to date, including a victory, a draw and 12 defeats.
The fewer victories at home
What is the current record? Sunderland (2005/06) and Derby (2007/08) both recorded a single home victory in the Premier League each.
Could Southampton break it? No, but they could match it. Their only home victory of the season to date came on November 2 when they beat Everton 1-0 in St Mary’s.
Most defeats
What is the current record? In fact in just 38 seasons of matches, Sunderland (2005/06), Derby (2007/08) and Sheffield United (2020/21) each lost 29 games.
Could Southampton break it? Yes. The saints have lost 24 of their games so far this season and could well establish a new record with nine games to play.
Most home defeats
What is the current record? Watford lost 15 of his 19 home games during the 2021/22 campaign when they were relegated to Roy Hodgson – the third permanent manager of the Hornets this season.
Could Southampton break it? Yes. The saints have lost 12 times in the League in St Mary’s this season. They still have five home games and will have a new record if they lose four.
The most consecutive home defeats
What is the current record? Watford lost 11 home games during the aforementioned 2021/22 season.
Could Southampton break it? Yes. The saints have lost their last nine games in St Mary’s – a race that started on November 24, when they lost 3-2 against Liverpool. They lost 2-1 against the wolves on home at home in the last match before the international break and the next Face Crystal Palace on April 2.
The longest sequence of victories
What is the current record? Derby holds the record for the longest sequence of the Premier League victories, which began on September 22, 2007 and lasted 32 games. It is, technically, still in progress because they have not returned to the high level since.
Could Southampton break it? No, but their 22 race without victory between March 12, 2023 and November 2, 2024 is the third longer in the history of the Premier League. This race also broke a longtime club record, which was previously 20 games, between August and December 1969.
Worse difference in objectives in a season
What is the current record? Derby (2007/08) and Sheffield United (2023/24) jointly hold this record, each ending with less than 69.
Could Southampton break it? Yes. Their current goals difference is at less than 49.
How do Martin and Juric’s records compare?
Southampton dismissed Russell Martin on December 15, after a 5-0 defeat at home against Tottenham. Six days later, Juric was installed as his successor on an 18 -month contract, costs of a fate in Roma which lasted less than two months.
“I think it’s a very big challenge, but I am very optimistic because I saw a team that can do better,” said former Croatia International when he was appointed.
Since then, Juric has taken care of 12 Premier League games and supervised a victory and 11 defeats. He has the lowest points per game per game of any manager to support at least 10 Premier League games with 0.25.
And a brief overview of the figures shows that few has gone from one manager to another.
