3 The leaders of the Chamber Energy and Trade Committee said they were investigating how the bankruptcy of 23andm could affect customer data.
Brett representatives Guthrie, Gus Bilirakis and Gary Palmer (all Republicans) sent a letter Thursday at the acting CEO of the genetic test company, Joe Selsage, asking a number of questions about how 23andm will manage customers if the company is sold.
The letter also indicates that some customers have reported problems deleting their data on the 23andme website, and it notes that direct companies to consumers like 23andme are generally not covered by the protections of the Portability and Health Insurance Act (HIPAA).
“Given the lack of HIPAA protections, the patchwork of the laws of states covering genetic confidentiality and uncertainty surrounding what happens to customer information if the sale of a company or customer data and information is transpired, we fear that this draft of sensitive information is at risk of being composed,” write representatives.
23andme, who set up a data violation trial For 30 million dollars last year, deposited for the bankruptcy of chapter 11 in March, co-founder and CEO Anne Wojciki saying that she resigns to become a private tenderer for the company.
