American and Chinese military officials met for their first work levels since the American president Donald Trump took office for the second time, the two parties sharing their respective concerns concerning military security in the seas.
The American Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement that talks, held on Wednesday and Thursday in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, focused on “the decrease in the impact of dangerous and non-professional actions” of the Naval and Air Forces of China.
The Chinese Defense Ministry said that he stressed that US military ships and planes have carried out “investigations, investigations and high intensity exercises in China’s maritime and air spaces, which are inclined to cause misunderstandings and calculation errors and Danger Sovereignty and Military Security of China.”
China has told the United States that it would continue to “respond to all dangerous provocative actions” and “resolutely protect national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” the ministry’s statement said.
The talks took place in the same week as Beijing led large -scale exercises in the waters and the airspace around the island of Taiwan. The meeting also came shortly after the American defense secretary Pete Hegseth told his Japanese counterpart that Japan was “our essential partner in the deterrence of Communist Chinese military assault”.

The links between Beijing and Washington have been tense in recent years on issues such as trade, cybersecurity, Taiwan and the Southern China Sea. Under Trump, a trade war worsened while its administration imposed prices and China announced reprisal measures.

To repel Chinese aggression in Indo-Pacific, the United States has intensified its presence in the region, sailing in the Taiwan Strait and performing exercises in the disputed southern China Sea. The United States is opposed to any forced takeover of Taiwan, which Beijing claims to be part of Chinese territory and promises to take force if necessary.
But the two governments also seek to keep the communication lines open, including through the semi -annual discussions of the working group.
The Chinese Defense Ministry said the two parties “made free and constructive exchanges on the security situation in the maritime and air areas” in Shanghai and that they discussed measures to improve maritime military security between the two countries.
