Lana Lang, played by Kristin Kreuk, is one of the most crucial characters in the series, serving not only as a romantic partner of Clark Kent by Tom Welling, but also as a dear friend of some of the most important characters in the series. However, at the end of season 7, Lana, in an effort to ensure that Clark can be the best heroic version of himself, gives him a sincere farewell and Smallville, with Kreuk actually leaving the show, to return for a stay of five episodes the following season to give a second Tragic end to the history of Lana-Clark.
Behind the scenes, it is greatly believed that the Kreuk contract at that time was simply finished and made. When he left in 2008, the actor frankly admitted that even if she greatly appreciated the series and the character of Lana, it was simply time to walk in other projects. “I love people and it’s a wonderful spectacle on which to work on, but I realized that there were things that I could not do because of the calendar on Smallville. Lana has changed so much since the first season, so she was always fun to play. I just wanted to try something else. It’s not that I was bored with the show.”
All well considered, from a strictly point of view of history, the departure of Lana felt natural, especially since Lois Lane by Erica Durance became a more important light and that the series was prepared for its last chapters.
Kristin Kreuk was not the only actor to leave Smallville around the seventh season
Kristin Kreuk was not the only actor to leave “Smallville” during this period. In fact, around season 7, it is when a large part of the main distribution of the show left the series.
Annette O’Tooole (who played Martha Kent) did not appear in seasons 7 and 8, and has only made minor appearances in the last two seasons. The seventh season saw Lionel Luthor by John Glover to be killed (although the actor returns as an alternative version of the character in season 10). Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor, left “Smallville” after season 7 (but returned for an epic presidential cameo in the series final) for various reasons, of his contract which leads his course to want to move to various projects not to be offered a salary increase. (The departure of the original showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar after season 7 also had an impact on the decision of Rosenbaum.)

As for Kreuk, the actor had no qualms about leaving the show. In 2024 fan panelShe gave in -depth reasoning to explain why she refused to come back for the tenth and last season of the show, and how she was satisfied with the end of the character of Lana:
“There is no dirt. I just wanted to go to an imaginary country. I wanted her to continue to live the life that she had gone to live and I did not want to bring her back […] I really had trouble with all the things of the love triangle […] I just couldn’t see how we come back and close this – like adding another closure to history where it was not only Clark and Laws. “”
