Mexico brought legal action against Google after changing the label of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America platform on its card platform to match the executive decree of US President Donald Trump to modify the name of the body of water, the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday.
Sheinbaum said at a press briefing that the trial had been brought against the technology giant without providing additional details.
The trial comes after Sheinbaum threatened in February to continue Google for the change of name.

“We are going to wait. We already see, observing what it would mean from the point of view of legal advice, but we hope they will revise,” said Sheinbaum at the time.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations also sent letters to Google by asking it not to relaunch the ocean basin as a Gulf of America.
Trump signed an order during his first day at the White House in January to rename the northern part of the Gulf at the Gulf of America. The body of water has shared boundaries between the United States and Mexico, and the order of Trump only bears authority in the United States

Mexico argued that the Label of the Gulf of America should only apply to the part on the American continental set. The United States controls approximately 46% of the Gulf, Mexico controls approximately 49% and Cuba controls approximately 5%, according to Sovereign Limits, a database of international borders.
“What Google does here is to change the name of the continental plateau of Mexico and Cuba, which has nothing to do with Trump’s decree, which only applies to the American continental platform,” said Sheinbaum in February.
The Gulf appears in Google Maps as the Gulf of America in the United States, as a Gulf of Mexico in Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico (American Gulf) everywhere else. He had been called the Gulf of Mexico for over 400 years.

Google Maps began to use the Golfe of America for users in the United States shortly after Trump’s order, citing its “long-standing practice” to follow the example of the US government on these issues. In cases where official names vary between countries, Google’s policy indicates that users will see their official local names.
In February, the Mexican President shared a response from the vice-president of government and public policies of Google, Cris Turner, who said that the company would not change its policy after Trump’s order.
The announcement by Sheinbaum of the trial comes after the Republicans of the Chamber adopted the law of the Golfe of America during a 211-206 vote, marking the first stage in the coding of the order of Trump. The legislation now goes to the Senate.
