Almost three years after the conclusion of the “Jurassic World” trilogy by Colin Trevorrow, Universal Pictures once again brings the public to a world filled with Dino. This time, it was “Godzilla” (2014) and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” Gareth Edwards at the bar on “Jurassic World Rebirth”, which recently unveiled its first trailer. The film promises a new start for the franchise and, above all, a lot, a lot of dinosaurs. They are not the same old dinosaurs. These are even more dangerous.
“These are the dinosaurs who did not work. There are changes in there,” as producer Frank Marshall said Vanity In an overview of the film. “They are all based on real research on dinosaurs, but they look a little different.”
Those who watched the trailer for the “Renaissance” probably took note of a bizarre dinosaur that appears several times and that looks quite like everything we have seen in these films before. It seems largely wrapped in the dark, lit only by lighting rockets or hidden behind the glass, but it is clear that it is an artificial abomination with prehistoric influences. But what is this mutant dinosaur, exactly? This is the big persistent question. For the moment, we have answers, even if the whole image has not yet been highlighted.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” tells a new story focused on all the new characters. He resumed five years after the events of the “Dominion” of 2022, the Earth ecosystem being largely proven inhospitable for dinosaurs. Those who remain exist in isolated environments near the equator with climates resembling the one they lived around 65 million years ago. However, as the three largest dinosaurs contain the key to a drug in their DNA which can bring vital advantages to humanity, a dangerous mission is hatched to recover this genetic material from dinos.
What did Gareth Edwards said about the mutant dinosaur?
The official synopsis of Universal for “Rebirth” also indicates that its main characters “will face each other with a sinister and shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades”. This certainly seems to refer to this failed experience of a dinosaur that we see in the trailer. Edwards, speaking in this same vanity piece, spoke a little about the creature, explaining that other famous film monsters influenced the appearance of this mystery beast:
“When you make a creature, you get a big solid pot and you pay your favorite monsters from other films and books … A grudge has been there, a HR Giger went there, a little T-Rex went in there … “
HR Giger is known for having created the xenomorphs in the “Alien” franchise, which is certainly a terrifying starting point. Then there is the resentment, which fans of “Star Wars” will know like the beast in the basement of the Jabba Palace in “Return of the Jedi”. It is certainly present in the mutant dinosaur that we see in the trailers. Add T-Rex to this, which is very present in the arms of the creature, and this thing looks like a monster in the most true sense of the word.
“This island was the research center for the original Jurassic Park,” said Zora Bennett de Scarlett Johansson in the “Renaissance” trailer. Dr. Henry Loomis by Jonathan Bailey adds later: “These dinosaurs were too dangerous for the original park. The worst of the worst was left here.”
Of course, it’s not like dangerous dinosaurs or artificial creatures are new concepts. The 2015 “Jurassic World” presented the notion of hybrid dinosaurs with franchise, starting with the Indominant Rex. Other hybrids such as the Indoraptor appeared later in the rest of the film, “Fallen Kingdom”, with the animated series “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” exploring this idea even by incorporating creatures such as Scorpios Rex and spinoceratops. So, is this mutant dinosaur a previous attempt at hybrid? Or is it something else?
What could the mutant dinosaur of Jurassic World Rebirth?
To date, there are no clear answers, although it is certainly possible that this mutant dinosaur is another hybrid. It is also advisable to underline, as Zora points out in the “Rebirth” trailer, that the characters in the film meet this creature at the original research center of the first Jurassic Park by John Hammond (who had been played by the late Richard attent Borough). It is not site B, alias Isla Sorna, which was presented for the first time in “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” by Steven Spielberg in 1997. It was the place where the Hammond team initially understood how to do dinosaurs. Without a doubt, there was a steep learning curve from the start. Even if Hammond was about to open his park, everything did not go as planned. Imagine what was wrong in these first days.
Indeed, it is possible that this mutant dinosaur is a failed attempt to give life to a real dinosaur. According to Edwards, he contains T-Rex, and he has T-Rex type arms based on the trailer. Was it a first attempt at the Jurassic Park genetics team to create a T-Rex that turned out badly? This seems to be a possibility based on the information currently available. This also seems to be a means for “the rebirth” to explore more Alan Grant (Sam Neill) “This is how you play God” of “Jurassic Park III”.
In order not to go too far in the territory of wild speculation here, but it should be remembered that the “Jurassic Park 4” script for John Sayles included human hybrids / dinosaurs. Some of the conceptual sketches of the film have made their way online and it is possible, as unlikely, that this idea was dusted by Edwards and the writer David Koepp for “Rebirth”. There is much less proof of this theory, although it shows that Universal has at least entertainment the notion of things that become really bizarre with this franchise in the past. We will just have to wait and see what they have prepared in this laboratory this summer.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” will be released in theaters on July 2, 2025.
