The former Chelsea striker and France Loic Remy weighed on the debate surrounding the controversial comments of Cristiano Ronaldo on Ligue 1, insisting that the French high flight “deserves more respect”. Remy, who previously played for Marseille and Lille, rejected Ronaldo’s claim that the Saudi Pro League is greater than Ligue 1.
The former striker has argued that the quality of French football has improved considerably over the years. Here is what he said Plejmo.com (via the objective):
“I respect Cristiano Ronaldo as a man and for his career, but I think that the French League deserves more respect. When I left France and I returned four years later, I was shocked by the Quantity of improvement.
The former LEAGUE’s former star recognized that the best teams in Saudi Arabia have strengthened in recent years but have not remained convinced of the overall quality of the League. He added:
“I can’t say much about Saudi Arabia because I have never played it, but I think the two or three best teams could compete in France, not the others.”
What does Cristiano Ronaldo say about Ligue 1?
Cristiano Ronaldo sparked controversy at the Globe Soccer Awards in December 2024 when he rejected the competitiveness of Ligue 1, saying that the Saudi Pro League was superior.
“The Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1, of course. I am not saying that because I play here. I don’t care what people think of it. Sprints at 38, 39, 40 degrees … Come and You will see.
He also took a blow to the domination of Paris Saint-Germain in France, arguing that no other club could compete with their financial power.
“In France, they have only PSG, everyone is over. No one can beat them because they have the most money and the best players,” added the Portuguese.
Ronaldo’s remarks are not well contained with several figures related to Ligue 1, which have since questioned its position, highlighting the constant rise of French football on the European scene.
Despite the criticisms, the Portuguese icon remains attached to Saudi football and would have extended its record contract with Al-Nassr. The 40 -year -old continues to pursue 1,000 career goals, remaining one of the biggest names in sport despite not playing in Europe.
