If you are a fan of Terminator movies but you want something a little more cheeky, 1992 Universal soldier is the next film you want to queue on Paramount +. Although this is a commercial success when it was released, Universal soldier received a healthy criticism to be a Terminator 2: Judgment Day Ripoff – But there are a lot to do because, as much as he wants to play it directly, there are a number of laughter moments that will make you want to move forward. In the same way, Universal soldier Has such an identity crisis that you really need to know what you are committed to to fully enjoy its narration.
Although a part of me wants to hate this film because of its many tone changes, I can’t help but appreciate its desire to break the convention and look into its sense of humor because all its premise is ridiculous and benefits from its blatant quantities of comic relief.
We have Terminator 2 at home

Universal soldier Begins at the height of the Vietnam War and presents our two enemies who will soon be enemies, Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and Sergeant Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren). Scott was made crazy by war, making him torture and mercilessly killing civilians, which is not going well with Deveraux, who wants to put an end to his madness. Food fatally on this dispute, the two soldiers are packed in ice and shipped in an unhappy place.
Waking up decades later and working for the Universal Soldier (Unisol) program, Deveraux and Scott have no memory of their past lives, and now react to GR44 and GR13, respectively, after being reprogrammed to follow orders and perform acts of fighting American terrorism. After seeing the hostages during one of his missions, GR44 begins to have lively flashbacks of his past life, including the crimes of GR44 against humanity when he was still known as Andrew Scott.
Meanwhile, the journalist in disgrace Veronica Roberts (Ally Walker) is surprised around the unisol seat, which means that Commander Colonel Perry (Ed O’Ross) sends her men to kill her. Taken in the middle of the cross fire, GR44 decides that his new mission is to protect Roberts, while GR13’s new objective becomes erase his old subordinate for helping a traitor.
Tonaux changes make an interesting watch

Depending on your expectations Universal soldier You will love this film or hate because it certainly has trouble choosing a path and staying there. On the one hand, you have this intense manifestation of excess military contrary to ethics, which leads to an epic pursuit involving unisol leaders and the journalist aimed at exposing them so that she can recover her career. But at the same time, there is all this on the way in which universal soldiers are subject to overheating, which, as far as I know, is only with a boost in the plot so that Jean-Claude Van Damme can be seen naked (I swear that he puts this in his contracts before signing a film) while he is preparing for his ice baths.
By realizing that he can have a follow -up device implanted somewhere in his body, GR44 (naked, of course) at some point asks Roberts to inspect his body and to “look for something hard” with a completely straight face. Likewise, when GR44 eats hundreds of dollars in food in a run -in restaurant, a simple misunderstanding of paying the bill made the shit always alive of all those who confused it with a thief, which is useless in Universal soldier Other than to show the combat skills of Jean-Claude Van Damme and provoke some generous laughs.
Universal soldier streaming on Paramount +

As much as I want to soak Universal soldier To be a disjointed mess, I fully appreciate what director Roland Emmerich was trying to do. If more concentration was put on the trauma of the war, and what it does to people when these horrible memories which were supposed to be wiped out forced, we could have had a poignant history on the dangers of excess military and the ethical implications of such an experience. Instead, we get a film that plays half of the time, while waiting for the right times to work in a little shtick, like the many communication failures of Gr44 and Roberts, because the first takes everything it literally and hilarious on its intentions at each stage.
But for any reason Universal soldier Works as is, and a large part of its entertainment value comes from these communication errors. If you are expecting a serious action film from front to back, you may want to sit down. But if you are looking for an action film that is almost too aware of the fact that it is an action film, then you will have a good time streaming Universal soldier On Paramount +.
And according to what you feel about it, there are a lot of direct video suites that you can plow once everything is said and done.
