Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) head coach, Justin Langer, expressed his diploma at the mega-entertainment every three years in the Indian Premier (IPL). The franchises had to sacrifice the heart they built due to the retention policy and build from zero due to the famous model in place.
The rule has helped maintain the level of intrigue in the league and a rescue buoy for sub-performing franchises. However, it was not well received by the majority, which deplores the lack of continuity.
LSG, for example, had to separate from several players who were part of their first configuration since their creation in 2022. The franchise kept five players before the mega auction IPL 2025, and built a new team led by the historic acquisition of 27 crores of Rishabh Pant.
Langer admitted that he would have ideally loved to keep 20 players in the LSG lot in 2024 and build a culture instead of carrying out an upheaval.
“Last year, we had 25 players, we kept 5, the other 20 returned to the swimming pool. Then you have this mega bid, then you start again every three years. It’s weird. Can you say to any other sport where it happens? In my perfect world, I would retain 20 players and build a culture, but that’s not how it works,” said Dlage the Podgast Beyond 23
Langer had the opportunity to work with a relatively well established team during their stay with Australia-Western, Perth Scot and the Australian male cricket team. The unstable dynamics and structure of the IPL presents itself as a huge challenge, even for the most accomplished coaches.
“They train, train, train” – Justin Langer welcomes the work ethics of Indian players
Justin Langer was impressed by the dedication of Indian players to the profession and congratulated them for having used all the resources at their disposal.
“Hunger in India for work, I have never seen anything like it. They practice, practice, practice. It is crazy. I always thought that we are working hard, but these guys are at a different level,” concluded Languer (15:37).
LSG gave chances to the emerging players of their team in the midst of an injury crisis at their bowling service. Prince Yadav’s tastes, M Siddharth and Digvesh Rathi made a positive impression during the 2025 season.
