Matty Healy, the main singer of the British rock group The 1975, told fans of the Glastonbury festival on Friday evening that the group would no longer infuse politics in their live performances. Despite Healy’s assertion, politically loaded visuals quickly appeared.
The rocker addressed the crowd after his traces of opening and noted that even if some can be disappointed by the “lack of politics” during their set, telling the fans that the group wants to move on and ensuring that their inheritance “will not be a policy”.
“People who look at this can – I don’t know – they can be disappointed with the lack of politics in this show and our shows to come and probably our future shows. I want you to know that it is a conscious decision”, he said to the crowd. “We honestly do not want our inheritance to be a policy. We want it to be that of love and friendship. I do not try to be too serious, but you can go out in the world and there is a lot of politics everywhere. And I think we don’t need more politics. We need more love and friendship.”

The singer called his comments “really basic”, but put pressure on the public to “suck at this level of friendship”.
After the speech, it took only one song to the group before politics appeared.
As noted Variety“Love it if we wed it”, one of the most politically loaded songs in the group, was accompanied by a montage displaying images of President Donald Trump, Kanye West and representations of the difficulties of immigrants.
Healy, who is an ex-friend of Taylor Swift, is no stranger to the controversy. He won the group in hot water in 2023 after kissing the group’s guitarist, Ross Macdonald, on stage in Malaysia to protest against the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws.

Not only did the moment led to the three-day festival for which they played to be canceled and the group prohibits occurring in Malaysia, but that may have had a negative impact on the identification citizens of the country’s LGBTQ.
As reported Variety, some residents feared that the actions of the group would lead to a new government’s repression on its homosexual citizens.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for the group told Variety: “Matty has a longtime record for defense of the LGBTQ +community, and the group wanted to defend its fans and LGBTQ +community.”
According to the entertainment site Nme.comHealy cried when Trump won in 2016. He added: “I was tired and we felt a little defeated.”
