Ruben Amorim’s first six weeks in charge of Manchester United certainly haven’t been as easy as he expected, but it looks like his ideas are finally coming to fruition.
The 39-year-old may have only won two Premier League matches to date, but managed to produce a much-improved performance against Championship leaders Liverpool on Sunday to end a run of four defeats consecutive.
Goals from Lisandro Martínez and Amad Diallo secured an unexpected point given the Reds’ imperious home form, with the 3-4-2-1 system starting to look effective in all areas of the pitch.
Despite the results, the January transfer window presents the first opportunity for the new boss to strengthen his ranks, with various areas requiring drastic investment to return the club to their glory days.
One area in particular could be significantly improved, with several names already mentioned regarding a move to Old Trafford, including one who has set England’s top flight ablaze in recent months.
Man Utd to make £42m bid for PL star
According to a Spanish media outlet, Man Utd ready to make €50m (£42m) offer to land Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo before the end of the January window.
The 25-year-old has been in superb form for Thomas Frank’s side in 2024/25, scoring 13 times in 20 appearancesonly Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have scored more to date.
However, the Bees are reportedly reluctant to part ways with the star man during this window, but the report claims United’s hierarchy see the Cameroonian as the solution to their attacking problems.
He can operate in a variety of attacking roles, whether in the centre, as a ten or on either flank – which could make him the ideal fit for Amorim’s current philosophy.
He would certainly bring an upgrade over a player currently plying his trade at Old Trafford, potentially ending his long-standing affiliation with the club.
Why Mbeumo would be an upgrade over Rashford
Academy graduate Marcus Rashford looked to be a crucial player during Amorim’s tenure at the helm after scoring three times in his first two matches under the new boss.
However, it appears his time at his boyhood club could come to an end in the near future following his recent exclusions from the first team.
The Englishman has not made an appearance for the Red Devils since the Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen in the first week of December. one of the last six releases in all competitions.
Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Juventus are only three parties interested in signing the 27-year-old has opened that window, opening the door to a possible transfer for Mbeumo.
The Brentford ace has massively outperformed Rashford in many key areas during 2024/25, highlighting what a superb addition he would be – even if he may cost a pretty penny in the process.
Mbeumo, who was nicknamed “one of the best players in the Premier League” by expert Dan Bardell, edged out the current United striker, whilst also scoring an average more progressive reaches and passes – highlighting his abilities in the final third.

On top of that, the Brentford star has achieved more care in 2024/25while winning more jumps, further demonstrating his talent to play in a variety of different roles should Amorim strike a deal for his signature.
There is no doubt that signings are desperately needed at Old Trafford if the Red Devils are to salvage anything from the current campaign, but it is crucial that any additions are smart and not just for the sake of it.
The Cameroonian is a player who could flourish if he moved to the North West, having all the tools to succeed under the former Sporting CP manager.
£42million is a phenomenal price for a player of his caliber, giving the team the new dimension in striker they have desperately needed in recent months.
