The accident occurred on the road between the cities of Uyuni and Colchani, when one of the vehicles swerved in the opposite path.
At least 37 people were killed and dozens of others injured in an accident involving two buses in the Western Potosi region of Bolivia, police and local authorities said.
The accident occurred on Saturday at 7 a.m. local time (11:00 GMT) on the route between the cities of Uyuni and Colchani, when one of the vehicles swerved in the opposite path.
Uyuni is the gateway to the Salar de Uyuni, a major tourist attraction and the largest salt apartment in the world at more than 10,000 km2 (3,900 m²).
“Following this fatal accident, we have 39 people injured in four hospitals in the city of Uyuni, and 37 people lost their lives,” a spokesperson for the Potosi departmental police command.
Police staff are working to identify people killed and those who were injured and hospitalized, added the spokesperson.
One of the buses headed for Oruro, where one of the most important carnival celebrations in Latin America is currently taking place.
The police withdrew the survivors of the steel wreck, according to images taken by Uyuni radio, which showed several bodies covered with covers scattered through the Andean highlands.
A police spokesman said one of the two drivers, who both survived the accident, was spotted by passengers consuming alcohol.
The mountainous, underestimated and not very superimposed roads in Bolivia are among the deadliest in the world, killing on average 1,400 people each year.
