Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country had felt the full support of his European allies after a Summit in London During the weekend, when he reiterated the need for Western security guarantees as part of any agreement to ensure a lasting end to the war launched by the large-scale invasion of his country by Russia three years ago. Ukraine fears that Russia is once again making any peace agreement that does not accept the threat that Ukraine’s partners would come to their aid in the event of a violation.
“For peace to be real, we need real security guarantees. And this is the position of all Europe – the whole continent,” Zelenskyy said in a social media position on Monday, three days after President Trump and vice -president JD Vance accused him of being “disrespectful” and not to have thanked during a Controversial oval office meeting with Rolling news cameras.
“Of course, we understand the importance of America, and we are grateful to all the support we received from the United States,” Zelenskyy said on Monday. “There was not a day when we did not feel gratitude. It is gratitude for the preservation of our independence – our resilience in Ukraine is based on what our partners do for us – and for their own security. What we need is peace, not endless war. And that is why we say that security guarantees are the key to that.”
The Sunday summit of European leaders organized by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was already scheduled before the Title meeting in Washington Between Zelenskyy and Mr. Trump, but he took a new meaning following the exchange.
Trump’s attitude towards the president of Ukraine in wartime has aggravated existing concerns among European leaders about the current commitment of the American administration to guarantee not only the independence of Ukraine in the future, but European security in general while the continent faces an increasingly aggressive Russian state managed by an authoritarian leader Vladimir Putin.
“It is not a moment for more discussions. It is time to act,” said Starmer after the gathering with his colleagues European leaders on Sunday. “It is time to intensify and direct and unite around a new plan for just and lasting peace.”

After the summit on Sunday, Zelenskyy gave a Ukrainian briefing in which he said that he thought that a peace agreement with Russia “is still very, very far”, but that the relationship of Ukraine with the United States would remain strong.
“I think our relationship (with the United States) will continue, because it is more than an occasional relationship,” said Zelenskyy, referring to the support that the United States has provided Ukraine since the invasion of Russia. His comments were covered by the Associated Press.
Later Monday, Trump published a link to the history of the AP covering the comments of Zelenskyy and criticized the Ukrainian leader.
“It is the worst declaration that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not support it any longer!” Trump said. “This is what I said, this guy does not want there to be peace as long as he has the support of America and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelenskyy, categorically said that they could not do the work without the United States-probably not a great declaration to have been made in terms of force against Russia. What do they think?”
What came out of the London summit?
Starmer said on Monday that there were “a number of options on the table” for possible peace plans to end the war that Russia had started, which were all developed alongside Ukraine, but he said that he did not want “in an executed comment”.
“We have to learn errors from the past,” said Starmer. “We cannot accept a weak affair that Russia can easily violate. Instead, any agreement must be supported by force.”
Before the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron told local media that a possible plan would imply a month-long ceasefire, but only covering air, maritime and energy infrastructure, not ongoing and fatal fights.
After the summit, Starmer announced four key points which, according to European leaders, announced that European leaders:
- To maintain the military aid flowing towards Ukraine and continue to apply the economic pressure on Russia
- That Ukraine must be present at everything in peace and that any lasting peace must guarantee the sovereignty and security of Ukraine
- To stimulate the defensive capacities of Ukraine if a peace agreement is accepted to stop war
- To create a “coalition of will” to help defend any peace agreement implemented in Ukraine.
Starmer has also announced a new agreement which will allow Ukraine to obtain around $ 2 billion in missiles made in Northern Ireland to continue its war efforts.
The effects of the undulations of the White House meeting are always felt
Russia praised Mr. Trump following his confrontation with Zelenskyy, who came after a week which saw the US leader echo the false discussion points that Moscow has pushed since he launched his large -scale invasion, including the assertion that Ukraine triggered war and that Zelenskyy is an illegitimate leader.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that “kyiv and Zelenskyy’s regime did not want peace”, adding that the confrontation between Trump and Zelenskyy, “demonstrated how difficult it will be to reach a colony trajectory around Ukraine.”
“It is very important that someone forces Zelenskyy himself to change his position,” said Peskov. “Someone has to make Zelenskyy want peace. If Europeans can do it, they must be honored and praised.”
Meanwhile, Russia has continued to hammer Ukraine with fatal air strikes. More than 80 explosive drones were launched in Ukraine overnight, killing at least eight people, including a 7 -year -old child, a child of CBS News reported on Monday.
Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Ukraine was still willing to sign a mineral agreement with the Trump administration, which would give access to the United States to the precious natural resources of Ukraine. We expected that he signed the agreement during his visit to Washington last week, but never engaged in advance because it was not clear if Ukraine would be offered security guarantees in exchange for its mineral wealth, and he was then invited to leave the White House early after the tense exchange with Mr. Trump.
US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, speaking on Fox News on Monday, said he seemed to be “not ready to talk about peace” on Peace. He said, however, that if the Ukrainian chief is considered to change this position, showing that he “regrets” for the way things have gone in Washington, and is ready to sign an agreement on Ukraine minerals, he would not exclude kyiv and Washington reaching an agreement. He even suggested that he could meet in time for Trump to announce an agreement when he delivers a national speech Tuesday evening.
“We would certainly like to see it happening,” said Waltz.
Earlier, American secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said it was “impossible to have an economic agreement without a peace agreement”, and he accused Zelenskyy of having “rejected the sequencing” of the agreements trying “to return to the world” in the oval office.
But some European leaders disagreed with this interpretation of events.
“My assessment is that it was not a spontaneous reaction to Zelenskyy’s interventions, but apparently an induced escalation in this meeting at the oval office”, ” Friedrich MerzWho is likely to be the next chief of Germany, said on Monday. “We must now show that we are able to act independently in Europe.”
